Rules for the end of season player awards
This sets out to clarify and set down as part of the club rules the criteria for the end of season player awards and whose names appear on the Honours Boards. For clarity, these constitute: • 1st XI batting average and bowling average • 2nd XI batting average and bowling average • Sunday XI batting average and bowling average • Most runs • Most wickets • Most catches • Frank Barwick all-rounder award • Dave Gandy bowling award • Captain of each XI 'player of the year' award In defining what winning ‘the averages’ means - it is not the player who has scored the most runs or taken the most wickets • Batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out • Bowling average is the ratio of runs conceded per wickets taken • Common practice is to set a minimum number of runs scored/innings completed, overs bowled/wickets. Qualifying measures are: 1st XI and 2nd XI league batting and bowling, plus any official cup matches that NECC might enter • Batting – minimum qualification is 10 completed innings. Should no one person achieve this it can be reduced at management’s discretion (a completed innings defined as being out or retired out) • Bowling – Minimum qualification is 100 overs bowled. (With 9 x 50 over matches and 9 x timed matches in league cricket, it is possible to bowl 225 overs.) Again this can be reduced at the management’s discretion. Sunday XI batting and bowling averages Sunday fixtures are usually 40 overs, with a maximum of 8 overs per bowler. There are usually 20 fixtures a year, therefore to match league qualification of one third of matches: • Batting – minimum of seven completed innings • Bowling – 10 wickets to qualify. Most runs, most wickets, most catches This is self-explanatory and is across all qualifying cricket being: • 1st and 2nd XI league games • 1st and 2nd XI pre-season friendlies • Sunday and Club XI matches. Matches that are excluded are: • Inter-club friendlies • 20/20 or social matches. Frank Barwick all-rounder award League, Sunday and Club XI fixtures qualify Batting, bowling, wicket-keeping and fielding can be included Captains to nominate players from each XI at the end of each season for decision by the management committee. Dave Gandy bowling award Awarded to the bowler with the best figures recorded in a League fixture or cup game i.e. the highest number of wickets taken in an innings for the fewest number of runs. 'Player of the year' award Nominated at the sole discretion of the Captain and approved by the management committee. To qualify a player must be fully paid up member of the club for the current season unless they are Honorary Life Members or Vice-Presidents.
